School nurses are seeing an average of 20 students per day with increased temperatures, headaches, body aches, and nausea. McKenzie Health Center Urgent Care Williston is seeing an increase in student and adult illnesses. According to Alissa Larsen, Family Nurse Practitioner at McKenzie Health “Influenza A is affecting all ages. There is also a spike in Influenza B and COVID.” Symptoms of Influenza A include high fever, body aches, chills, malaise, and mild head/chest congestion. Larsen states, “There is no treatment other than symptomatic care.” Tylenol and Ibuprofen for high fevers, ensuring adequate hydration with small frequent sips of fluids. If symptoms of loose stools and vomiting occur, include an electrolyte-based drink to replenish. Concerning symptoms such as; intractable vomiting, a fever that does not respond to medication (i.e. taking Tylenol for a 103 temp and an hour later the temperature is 104), intractable body pain (outside of normal body aches) or lethargy to where your child is unarousable would require a visit to the ER. As always, Larsen states, “If a parent is ever concerned to seek medical care.” Flu season typically occurs in the fall and winter months and peaks between December and February. Please encourage your child to cover their cough and sneeze, wash hands frequently, avoid sharing items, and limit close contact with those who are sick. Douglas also recommends that everyone aged 6 months and older receive the flu vaccine. “While the flu vaccine may not completely prevent infection it significantly reduces the severity of symptoms and the risk of serious complications.” If your child is experiencing these symptoms and/or has been diagnosed with Influenza A, Influenza B, norovirus, strep throat, or COVID, please do not send your child to school. Students and staff may return to school 24 hours after their fever is gone without fever-reducing medication and symptoms are improving.
